Ingredients (4-6 servings)
1.3 kg (3 lb) beef
2 tsp sugar
1 tsp salt
1 tsp chicken stock
1/2 tsp pepper
2 tsp five-spice/ bo kho powder
2 tbsp minced garlic
1 tbsp grated ginger
2 tbsp soy sauce
4 stalks lemongrass, cut into 3-inch
3 star anise
1 cinnamon stick
1.5 cup tomato sauce (or 3 tbsp tomato paste)
300ml coconut water / coconut soda
6 cups beef broth (or water)
1 kg ( 2 lb) carrots
more salt, sugar, chicken stock to taste
optional: coloring oil from annatto seeds
French baguettes / rice noodle
pepper, fried red shallot
sawtooth herbs, Thai basils
thinly sliced onion, chopped spring onion, cilantro

  1. Hi helen can i cook this dish in the oven and if so how long would i cook for i only need to cook for 2 people so would only be 500grams of beef.. cant wait to try this!

  2. I have the same pressure cooker but I have not used it yet. I guess this dish will be my reason to use it. I was deterred from using it because I saw videos of pressure cookers exploding! 😱 But I think you just need to release the pressure to prevent it 👍

    I have lot of Vietnamese friends SO I have eaten so many version from all the Mum's and aunties and I myself cook Bo Kho from scratch to using the paste from the jar.

    This version is for Westerners.

Hi helen, I liked your videos and recipes, it looks so tasty, I'm planning to make this dish, I just wanna ask something, what is the ingredients of the five aroma that you used on marinating he beef brisket? Because Im confuse, is it the five aroma like the Chinese have(garlic powder, onions powder and etc?)? Or it is the cinnamon powder, star anis powder and etc? Tnx for your answer more power.. 😊

Love this power pressure cooker!>>> It dose everything it clams it will do! have used it to do chicken, vegies, used it to can fish! it is fun to try new use's for this unit ! food comes out with so much more flavar, you will love using it! And most important it shiped on time and that's always important to me living in Alaska!!
